Uncomfortable with the idea of being inadequate, Sedaris decides as a young man to go to art school because his sister Gretchen is a talented artist and he wants to experience the same amount of praise she has earned. He and his sister Amy have especially eclectic obsessions, finding humor in things that would normally disgust, appall, or disconcert others. Whereas his father is invested in mathematics, science, and sports, Sedaris is most interested in style and a number of other odd fascinations. His father, Lou, is an engineer at IBM and has high expectations for Sedaris-expectations that Sedaris has no interest in meeting. Originally from New York State, his family moves to Raleigh, North Carolina when he’s young. The book’s essays all feature him in one way or another, though he often writes about his family members, too. David Sedaris, a humorist and essayist, is the protagonist of Me Talk Pretty One Day.
